Job Summary
Paid On-Call Firefighter responsible for fire prevention, protection, suppression, and rescue services, including responding to hazardous and emergency situations. You will participate in regular training, drills, and practice sessions; maintain and service equipment, turnout gear, and uniforms; and engage in public education programs and community events to promote fire safety and build community relationships. This role emphasizes teamwork, availability for training and emergency calls, physical readiness, and a commitment to serving the community with professionalism and safety.
Required Qualifications
- Be at least 19 years of age
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
- Reside within the District of Sparwood
- Possess a valid Class 5 non-restricted driver’s license with a safe driving record
- Provide a clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check
- Be in good physical condition and able to successfully complete a physical agility test
- Be capable of performing prolonged, physically demanding work in adverse conditions and inclement weather
- Be available to attend required training sessions and maintain an acceptable attendance record for emergency calls
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
- Interact with the public in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner
Desired Qualifications
- Availability to respond to daytime emergencies
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Possession of a Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 driver’s license, and/or air brake endorsement
- Completion of fire-related courses, such as NFPA 1001 Level II, NFPA 1002, NFPA 472
- Advanced first aid training (e.g., OFA Level 3, EMR, or equivalent)
- Previous firefighting, emergency services, or Mine Rescue experience
