Job Summary

Review clinical documentation and diagnostic results to verify appropriate ICD-10 CM, CPT, and HCPCS code assignments per Official Guidelines. Examine chart progress notes to identify chargeable items, apply sequencing rules for principal diagnoses, and track open/close encounter reports. Communicate with providers regarding documentation to ensure proper coding and reimbursement while maintaining knowledge of anatomy and physiology for complex cases. Organize work to meet department policy timeframes and serve as an expert resource for coding questions. Maintain confidentiality of electronic medical records and adhere to core competencies, policies, and professional conduct standards.

Required Qualifications

  • One (1) year of medical coding experience
  • CPC or CCS certification
  • Current Procedural Coder (CPC) Certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • AHIMA American Health Information Management Association certification
  • Currently live in California or willingness to relocate prior to employment
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Good customer service skills
  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology
  • Knowledge of diagnostic tests
  • Knowledge of procedures
  • Knowledge of pathology terms
  • Knowledge of drug reference books
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM
  • Knowledge of HCPCS/CPT
  • Knowledge of HCC coding & abstracting procedures
  • Proficient in typing skills
  • Experience with using computers and software systems
  • Ability to work in a noisy setting
  • Ability to handle multiple activities simultaneously

  • Maintains knowledge of Anatomy & Physiology to interpret general medical classifications for coding including the most complicated encounters/cases
  • Acts as an expert resource person to other coders & personnel in other departments regarding coding questions & issues
  • Participates in ongoing education, including in-service training and other activities to maintain and improve competence
  • Adheres to SYHC's Core Competencies and professional Code of Conduct Behavior Standards
  • Demonstrates skills in collaboration with team and problem-solving
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops
