Outside Plant Technician

Job Summary
Install, maintain, and repair copper and fiber optic Outside Plant infrastructure, including splicing cables, constructing routes, and fixing faults to prevent signal interruptions. Test and troubleshoot fiber using OTDRs and optical meters, validate end-to-end service provisioning, and maintain accurate splicing schematics, records, and staking sheets. Perform routine maintenance such as hand-hole cleanup and jumper placement, while adhering to safety standards like OSHA, FCC, and NESC. Respond to emergency callouts to restore services and provide on-the-job training to interns. Work weekdays, weekends, and holidays, including evenings and nights, subject to occasional overtime.
Required Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent
- 3 years of experience in outside plant installation and repair for both copper and fiber
- 6 to 12 months of this experience in the construction of outside plant facilities
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to drive with manual gear shift
- Knowledge of design techniques, tools and principles involved in the production of technical plans, blueprints, and drawings
- Understanding of how to read staking sheets
- Knowledge of telecommunications standards and practices
- Knowledge of telecommunications construction and maintenance requirements and regulations
- Knowledge of telecommunications equipment, networks, and processes, to include fiber optics, DSL, and Outside Plant safety
- Team working skills
- Skills in managing human and material resources
- Skills in installing, splicing and locating copper and fiber cables
- Skills in using personal computer hardware and Microsoft software programs
- Skills in providing good customer service in the resolution of their problems
- Skills in using construction equipment, hand tools, fusion splicer, OTDR, fiber identifiers and scope
- Ability to work with clients regarding engineering problems
- Ability to pay close attention to detail and make good sound decisions based on information given
- Ability to identify and distinguish colors
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time
- Ability to multitask and work under pressure with the ability to prioritize and organize effectively
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and accurately with all levels of staff and customers, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to carry, climb and operate extension ladder, (approx. 28 ft. high and 75 pounds), and lift and carry other heavy objects such as generators, manhole covers, pull-box covers, etc.
- Ability to pull/pull heavy objects such as aerial platforms, racking and forming cables
- Ability to drive company vehicles in a safe and responsible manner
- Ability to work independently without supervision, maintaining a positive attitude and strong work ethic
- Ability to work indoors, outdoors, in poorly ventilated areas, in confined spaces, during extreme heat, exposed to dust, dirt, noise, insects, cleaning solutions, in all kinds of weather and at all times of the day or night
- Ability to work exposed to high voltage electrical power lines, explosive and/or flammable liquids and gases, oxygen deficiency, carbon monoxide, lead toxicity and asbestos materials
- Ability to work with molten lead and wax
- Ability to work assigned work tour which may be weekdays, weekends, and holidays, including days, evenings, and night hours
- Ability to be subject to occasional scheduled and/or unscheduled overtime and callouts
Desired Qualifications
- Technical school graduate
- Certification for Fiber Optic Cable installation
- Vendor certification for business systems installation and maintenance
