Job Summary
Installs, maintains, and repairs ship propulsion and auxiliary systems in a shipyard setting, including Steam, Turbine, Electrical, and Diesel propulsion systems, rudders/steering gear, elevators, and Navy UNREP systems; also handles fluid systems with pumps, compressors, purifiers, heat exchangers, actuators, valves, and tests equipment to meet specifications. Requires reading and interpreting mechanical drawings and hydraulic/pneumatic diagrams, assembling/installing complex mechanical systems with attention to alignment, and using precision measurement tools. Must perform tasks safely in a dynamic shipyard environment and be able to read shop manuals, manuals, and technical instructions. Physical requirements include frequent lifting up to 50 lbs and working in confined spaces or variable positions. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least three years of related experience or Navy/mechanic training background.
Required Qualifications
- High school or equivalent education
- Minimum three years of experience in a related field, or graduate of a Diesel or Aircraft Mechanic training school, or three years in Navy ratings: MM (BT), AD, CM, EN, GS, HT, or MR
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings; Ability to read hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams
- Proficiency in use of precision measurement tools
- Ability to work with Imperial and Metric measuring systems
- Shop math skills including geometry and trigonometry; comfortable with decimals and fractions
- Must maintain safety awareness and follow safety instructions
- Must be able to safely use hand and power tools and portable machining tools
- Color vision, ability to lift up to 50 lbs, and physical ability to work in shipyard environments
