Job Summary
Enforce Racing Commission Rules of Racing while on the racetrack, writing reports of all violations that take place while on duty. Arrive on a sound trained horse to lead the post parade of horses in post-position order to the starting gate, keeping them in line for the warm-up. Grooms and cares for your own horse, and if requested, arrive on a suitable pony to open the track for training during training hours. Rides after a runaway horse to aid the rider in regaining control and catches any loose horses on the track while on duty. Diverts riders from a competitor involved in an accident and assists horse ambulance workers to remove an injured horse from the track. Directly supervises all riders and pony personnel while they are on the track, carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Racing Commission Rules of Racing policies and applicable laws. Address complaints and resolve problems as assigned. Available to work for any training or racing hours.
Required Qualifications
- Must be an experienced rider and have held a pony rider license
- Must be able to catch loose or troubled horses while maintaining control of the pony being ridden
- Must be knowledgeable of the Rules of Racing
- Must have a thorough knowledge of horse racing
- Must be proficient in Microsoft applications (Excel, Access, Word)
- Must qualify for an Outrider's license with Racing Commission
- Must be able to work in various weather conditions
- Must meet professional appearance standards as prescribed by company policy
- Must possess a valid driver's license and have acceptable driving history as determined by PENN Entertainment, Inc.'s auto insurance carrier
- Must be drug free
- Ability to read and interpret documents in English, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
- Ability to read and communicate verbally in English
- Written communication skills in in English may also be required
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to perform these operations using units of America money and weight measurement, volume and distance
- Possess ability to operate an adding machine and have basic computer skills
- Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
- Employee must be able to qualify for licenses and permits required by federal, state and local regulations, including the Ohio State Racing commission
- Ability to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls
- Ability to reach with hands and arms and talk or hear
- Close vision, color vision, and peripheral vision
- Physically mobile with reasonable accommodations including ability to push, pull, carry and lift up to 75 lbs
- Ability to push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop, stack, crouch, kneel and balance when performing job duties in varying work areas such as confined spaces
Desired Qualifications
- High School diploma; 1 year Starting Gate experience or horse handling experience preferred
- equivalent combination of education and experience
- Multilingual
- Ability to perform these operations using units of America money and weight measurement, volume and distance
