Job Summary
Associate Chemist Level III in the Organic Chemistry section of the Distribution Laboratory performs routine qualitative and quantitative analyses of trace organic contaminants in drinking water using gas chromatographic methods, ensuring QA/QC per ELAP/TNI protocols and the DWQ Manual. Responsibilities include developing/implementing organic analysis methods, preparing SOPs and QC objectives, reviewing QC data, maintaining equipment and inventory, assisting with STARLiMS data management and electronic reporting, and performing routine instrument maintenance. Requires a baccalaureate degree with chemistry credits, NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist license, and two years of relevant laboratory experience. Work schedule is 35 hours per week, day shift with potential nights, weekends, and holidays at the DEP location in Flushing, NY. This posting is for City employees who are already permanent in the Associate Chemist title.
Required Qualifications
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including chemistry credits (16 semester credits in chemistry and 8 in a related science)
- Valid License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist issued by the NYS Education Department
- Two years of full-time satisfactory laboratory experience for higher assignment levels (Level II+)
- Experience with chemical or physical analyses in a laboratory (relevant to the role)
- Ability to perform routine analytical testing following approved methods
- Familiarity with ELAP/TNI protocols and QA/QC procedures
- Proficiency with laboratory software and data systems (STARLiMS)
- Ability to interpret QC data and maintain calibration standards
- Willingness to work variable hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Physical ability to perform lab tasks and handling of equipment
