Job Summary

Conduct daily deck operations and vessel maintenance, including supporting safe vessel operations under the direction of the Bosun and deck officers. Perform lookout duties, assist with mooring, anchoring, and docking, and execute routine tasks such as chipping, sanding, priming, and painting. Manage lines, rigging, and deck gear while assisting with cargo operations and emergency drills. Adhere strictly to all company, USCG, and maritime safety regulations. Work in the Arctic marine environment across the Bering, Chukchi, Beaufort, and Gulf of Alaska seas, enduring extreme cold, wind, and irregular visibility.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid MMC (Merchant Mariner Credential) with Ordinary Seaman endorsement (or entry-level deck rating)
  • Valid TWIC Card
  • Current STCW Basic Training
  • Ability to pass: Pre-employment drug test
  • Ability to pass: Background check
  • Ability to pass: Physical/fit-for-duty screening
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to perform prolonged standing, sitting, twisting, kneeling, squatting, and reaching
  • Full range of motion of extremities and spine
  • Good balance and coordination on uneven and slippery surfaces
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairwells, and pushknees
  • Ability to step 2 feet horizontally and vertically when transferring between vessels and docks
  • Ability to carry 30 lbs for 30 feet
  • Ability to perform medium-heavy labor in extreme weather conditions while wearing required PPE
  • Work in confined and cramped spaces
  • Arctic marine environment including extreme cold, wind, icing, moisture, and wave action
  • Exposure to fuels, solvents, cleaners, dust, fumes, and gases
  • Constant engine, blower, and exhaust noise
  • Irregular visibility conditions (fog, darkness)
  • Vessel vibration
  • Frequent hazards including hypothermia, slips, falls, lifting injuries, and pinch points
  • Continuous hazard awareness required
  • Rotational schedules available
  • Travel between seas and ports is part of the role
  • Long periods at sea expected depending on project needs

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior deckhand or OS experience (commercial, tug, offshore, research, ferry, etc.)
  • Cold-weather or Alaska maritime experience
  • VPDSD, RFPNW, or additional STCW endorsements
  • Small boat, crane, or cargo-handling experience
  • Familiarity with marine maintenance tools and procedures
