Job Summary
Optometric Technician supports the Optometrist with administrative and clinical tasks in the clinic, including preparing patients for exams, performing preliminary tests (visual acuity, pupil assessment, confrontation fields, EOMs, IOPs), administering eye drops, and scribal documentation. Responsibilities extend to assisting with eyeglasses and contact lens selections, measuring pupillary distance and segment height, calculating patient out-of-pocket costs, and managing referrals and insurance inquiries. The role also involves patient education on eye care, maintaining patient records in the EHR, and ensuring equipment is clean and functional. A key component is participation in the mobile optometry outreach program, traveling to outreach sites to set up mobile clinics and serve underserved communities. Training and compliance with HIPAA and safety policies are required, along with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Travel is required, with the position based in White Cloud, MI and weekly travel to Baldwin, MI.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Formal training or equivalent experience in optical/clinical practices (certificate/technical program or 1-2 semester-length courses)
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Proficiency with EHR systems and basic computer skills
- Willingness to travel
- Healthcare setting experience preferred
