Job Summary
The Ophthalmic Assistant provides technical and clinical support and patient care for ophthalmology physicians and subspecialists by performing tests to aid in diagnosis and treatment, assists with patient care and minor surgery, and serves as a liaison between patients and physicians. Responsibilities include interviewing patients and documenting histories; performing tests such as refractions with retinoscopy, lensometry, keratometry, tonometry, visual fields, Amslers, muscle testing, pupil exams, topography, OCT, IOL Master/Ascans, and fundus photography; assisting physicians and scribes; communicating with patients regarding follow-up care, surgeries, and scheduling; maintaining and cleaning equipment; and performing other duties as assigned. Preferred experience includes two years of related experience and surgical assistance experience.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED equivalent
- Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification through JCAHPO within one year of hire date
- 0 to 2 years’ experience in a relevant role
