Operations & Finance Manager (Tree Care Company)

Job Summary

Oversee all accounting functions including AP/AR, job costing, budgeting, and financial reporting while managing cash flow, forecasting, and controls. Lead full-cycle payroll for a mixed workforce, ensuring compliance with California labor laws and serving as the point of contact for emergencies and injuries. Manage employee records, benefits administration, and performance reviews while developing HR policies and disciplinary systems. Drive change management initiatives in English and Spanish to build structure across office and field teams, and train administrative staff on marketing and SEO efforts. Help shape long-term operational and financial strategy to meet annual goals.

Required Qualifications

  • Live within a 40-minute commute of Martinez
  • Natural leader with experience overseeing +/-40 employees
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • 5+ years of experience in management, operations management, or another leadership position
  • Ideally in a residential service-based business (tree care, landscaping, construction, plumbing, HVAC, etc.)
  • Strong accounting background with hands-on experience in payroll, financial reporting, and budgeting
  • Human Resources experience
  • Proven ability to implement systems that hold teams accountable and improve performance
  • Highly organized, decisive, and comfortable managing both people and processes
  • Must be able to communicate important concepts to a handful of staff members whose primary language is Spanish including: changes in company policies, teaching a new time-keeping application, reviewing OSHA & safety rules, etc.
  • Must be able to meet with employees annually for their performance review
  • Must be able to do regional compensation analysis
  • Must be able to provide raises when needed
  • Must be able to write employees up
  • Must be able to put employees on PIPs (Performance Improvement Plans) when needed
  • Must be able to process EDD (Employment Development Dept.) forms
  • Must be able to deal with Worker's Comp. insurance and claims
  • Must be able to evaluate medical/dental/optical renewal fees
  • Must be able to roll out annual benefits
  • Must be able to track vacation time
  • Must be able to check in with staff on a routine basis to make sure they're thriving at work
  • Must be able to serve as the company's point of contact for emergencies and injuries
  • Must be able to send new field candidates to get physical exams
  • Must be able to work with the parent company's Human Resources & Payroll Manager as needed
  • Must be able to develop and enforce clear HR policies
  • Must be able to develop and enforce clear disciplinary systems
  • Must be able to develop and enforce clear performance management processes
  • Must be able to lead change management initiatives with clarity and consistency in both English and Spanish
  • Must be able to build structure and accountability across both office and field teams
  • Must be able to help shape the company's long-term operational and financial strategy
  • Must be able to train the administrative staff to continue marketing and SEO efforts: post on social media, update and send out newsletters, contact clients for Google reviews, etc.
  • Must be able to educate the inside sales staff about Plant Health Care and other services we offer
  • Must be able to ensure that the team is working collaboratively, sharing the workload, and making you aware of times when they need extra support or staff
  • Must be able to keep the work culture fun yet highly efficient
  • Must be able to work on-site in Martinez, CA
  • Must be able to respond to security alarms and local police if needed, day or night

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in the trades
  • Degree in accounting, finance, business, construction management, or something that helps you understand the inner workings of a growing operations organization
  • Knowing EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) or another methodology for strengthening company culture and determining when you have the 'right people in the right seats on the bus' (ala Jim Collins)
