Job Summary
Conduct professional legal prosecutorial work for the Yakama Nation, defending treaty rights and inherent sovereignty in tribal, state, and federal courts. Evaluate police reports to prepare complaints, motions, and legal documents for civil and criminal matters, including Indian Child Welfare Act cases. Perform legal research, analyze case complexities, and prosecute adult and juvenile cases while serving as a legal advisor to law enforcement. Maintain confidentiality of privileged records and develop collaborative relationships with tribal police, other agencies, and community members. Work independently with wide latitude for judgment, manage fluctuating caseloads, and provide input on tribal code development.
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited School of Law with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree or graduation with Master of Laws (LLM) degree from any university
- Washington State Bar License required, with member in good standing, or obtain WSBA License within the probationary period, admission to practice law in the Yakama Nation Tribal
- Required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and random UAs as required by the Yakama Nation Personnel Policy Manual
- Required to pass a pre-employment background
