Job Summary
Conduct pre-field literature reviews, background research, and plan cultural resources fieldwork across New Mexico. Execute intensive pedestrian inventory surveys averaging 50 acres daily, document archaeological sites, and assess NRHP eligibility. Manage field data collection from crew members, draft monitoring reports, and prepare deliverables for state and federal agencies. Coordinate archaeological monitoring during construction activities while maintaining regular attendance and adhering to safety protocols. Requires Master's degree, 4+ years experience, and proficiency with ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123. Compensation ranges from $32 to $41 per hour for on-call, variable-time roles with outside travel.
Required Qualifications
- Listed on the New Mexico SHPO Directory at the Supervisory Archaeologist/Crew Chief level
- Master's degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field
- Completion of a field school
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience
- Proficient in prehistoric and/or historic archaeology statewide in New Mexico
- Proficient in documenting archaeological sites and isolates statewide in New Mexico
- Use hand-held field technology (i.e., ArcGIS phone/tablet application paired with sub-meter GPS receivers)
- Survey an average of 50 acres/8 miles per day (not including resource documentation)
- Carry personal health and safety equipment (i.e., personal water, sunscreen, etc.)
- Work in moderate weather conditions (fluctuating temperatures and inclement weather, including rain and snow)
- Ability to follow instructions and to make adjustments when provided feedback
- Organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, dependable, and trustworthy
- Excellent navigational skills (GPS and compass) and ability to navigate and drive 4WD vehicles
- Ability to read, write, and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors
- Position will require outside travel
Desired Qualifications
- Proficiency with ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 applications (for phone or tablet)
- Previous NHPA, NEPA, FERC, and/or other cultural or environmental trainings
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Strong communication and organization skills
- Authored multiple archaeological site forms and inventory reports
- Prior experience supporting state and federal agencies
