Job Summary
The Nutrition Services Technician prepares and delivers animal diets in the Zoo Nutrition Center under the Zoo Animal Manager and Curator of Nutrition, ensuring compliance with AZA accreditation standards and USDA food-safety regulations. Responsibilities include maintaining kitchen and storage areas, managing inventory, receiving and inspecting deliveries, preparing diets from ingredients, assisting in procurement of browse, performing preventive maintenance on equipment, keeping diet records, and supporting the Emergency Response team. The role requires operating equipment (forklift, electric pallet jack, band saw), driving for FCZC facilities, and guiding interns or volunteers. Regular guest interactions and adherence to OSHA safety standards are expected. This is a part-time position with benefits including EAP, 401K, and CA Sick Time. Desired skills include strong English communication, problem solving, teamwork, and the ability to work flexible hours and adapt to shifting priorities.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- 4-year degree in Animal Science, Nutrition, Feed Science, or related field OR 2 years of experience in food service desired
- Demonstrated knowledge of food service and handling safety practices
- Strong verbal and written English skills; ability to communicate effectively with the public
- Valid California driver’s license, valid vehicle insurance, enrollment in CA Employer Pull Notice program, and completion of FCZ Drivers Training Program
- Ability to be trained to operate forklift, electric pallet jack, and band saw
- Show initiative in problem solving; alertness and good judgement
- Open to early mornings, evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to safely operate equipment and perform physical tasks
- Ability to interact with zoo guests and maintain guest experience
