Job Summary
Supervise day-to-day nursing activities during the 6:00 PM to 6:30 AM shift, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while maintaining the highest quality of care. Make daily rounds to monitor personnel performance, develop work assignments for registered nurses and certified nursing assistants, and interpret departmental policies for staff, residents, and government agencies. Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required; complete accident/incident reports and medical forms; and authorize restraints when necessary. Monitor medication administration, review care plans, and consult with physicians to ensure timely progress notes. Participate in committee meetings, quality assurance programs, and surveys; conduct in-service training; and manage infection control and safety protocols. Report problem areas to the Director and assist in developing corrective action plans.
Required Qualifications
- Experience in nursing supervision
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations governing long-term care facilities
- Ability to direct day-to-day nursing activities
- Ability to develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures
- Ability to interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies
- Ability to participate in developing the facility's quality assurance program
- Ability to participate in surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies
- Ability to review and update resident discharge plans
- Ability to coordinate nursing services with other resident services
- Ability to ensure nursing service personnel comply with job descriptions and procedures
- Ability to ensure sufficient numbers of licensed practical and/or registered nurses are available
- Ability to ensure sufficient numbers of certified nursing assistants are available
- Ability to develop work assignments
- Ability to delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses
- Ability to ensure nurse aide trainees are under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
- Ability to make daily rounds of the nursing service department
- Ability to monitor absenteeism
- Ability to ensure established policies and procedures, including dress codes, are followed
- Ability to review complaints and grievances
- Ability to develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-department personnel
- Ability to create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and a calm environment
- Ability to meet with shift staff to identify and correct problem areas
- Ability to review and evaluate department work force
- Ability to participate in employee performance evaluations
- Ability to determine shift staffing requirements
- Ability to administer disciplinary action fairly
- Ability to inform nursing service personnel of new admissions and room assignments
- Ability to greet newly admitted residents
- Ability to make rounds with physicians
- Ability to consult with residents, families, and physicians in planning care
- Ability to notify physicians and next-of-kin of changes in resident condition
- Ability to visit residents daily to observe and evaluate physical and emotional status
- Ability to ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel
- Ability to review nurses' notes for informativeness and accuracy
- Ability to provide direct nursing care as necessary
- Ability to start IVs, obtain specimens, and take vital signs
- Ability to admit, transfer, and discharge residents
- Ability to report problem areas and develop corrective action
- Ability to keep the Director informed of resident status
- Ability to assist the Charge Nurse in monitoring seriously ill residents
- Ability to authorize the use of restraints in accordance with facility policies
- Ability to ensure RNs and LPNs comply with written procedures for medication administration and storage
- Ability to monitor medication passes and treatment schedules
- Ability to review medication cards for completeness and accuracy
- Ability to inspect nursing service treatment areas daily
- Ability to check residents who are unable to call for help
- Ability to meet with residents and/or family members
- Ability to arrange transportation for discharged residents
- Ability to inform family members of resident death
- Ability to call funeral homes when requested
- Ability to participate in developing, planning, conducting, and scheduling in-service training classes
- Ability to develop, implement, and maintain an effective orientation program
- Ability to provide leadership training for Charge Nurses
- Ability to encourage Charge Nurses to attend outside training programs
- Ability to develop annual mandated OSHA and CDC in-service training programs
- Ability to develop advance directive in-service training programs
- Ability to assist support services in developing in-service training programs
- Ability to ensure in-service programs meet continuing education requirements for licensed personnel
- Ability to attend and participate in continuing education programs
- Ability to identify, evaluate, and classify job-related functions with potential exposure to blood/body fluids
- Ability to ensure adequate supply of personal protective equipment
