Job Summary
Conduct primary and preventive medical care, including urgent and emergent evaluations for episodic and chronic problems, while diagnosing health issues based on patient history and physical exams. Develop tailored treatment plans, prescribe medications, and order diagnostic tests, then evaluate outcomes to modify care as needed. Manage patient flow, schedule appointments, and close charts within 24-72 hours while maintaining universal precautions and infection control. Collaborate with the Patient Aliened Care Team through daily huddles, supervise support staff, and ensure accurate documentation in VISTA. Perform CPR and assist during cardiac arrests, set up emergency equipment, and provide health education to patients and families. Maintain current APRN certification, New York license, and DEA registration, with a focus on wellness, prevention, and early detection within VA standards.
Required Qualifications
- Three years of clinical nursing experience
- Minimum of one-year clinical experience as an APRN
- Current and unrestricted DEA License
- Current and unrestricted New York license
- Basic Life Support (BLS)/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification from American Heart Association (AHA) or the Military Training Network (MTN)
- Prescriptive authority in accordance with state rules and regulations
- Master's degree in nursing from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited nursing program
- Full and current certification as a Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Association (ANA)
- ANA certification as a Nurse Practitioner in either Adult Health or Family Practice
- Ability to set realistic, measurable education goals for patients
- Ability to develop and provide individualized and group counseling, guidance, and health instruction
- Experience with safe and reasonable practices regarding opioid medications for chronic pain
- Exceptional diplomatic communication skills
- Experience in handling difficult customer situations
- Detail oriented
- Ability to multi-task
- Moderate physical activity
- Handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds
- Standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day
- Ability to respond to any medical emergency within the clinic
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in outpatient care in a Family Medicine or Internal Medicine environment
- Three years preferred (in addition to the required three years of clinical nursing experience)
