Job Summary
Conduct comprehensive pre-admission and preoperative assessments for surgical and procedural patients, including review of medical history, medications, allergies, and relevant diagnostic information. Identify patients requiring clinical optimization, specialty input, or anesthesia review, then order, review, and follow up on appropriate preoperative testing. Assess and manage perioperative risk factors such as cardiovascular, pulmonary, and endocrine conditions while collaborating with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and nursing staff to resolve clinical issues before the day of surgery. Provide clear patient and family education regarding preoperative instructions and medication management, then complete accurate documentation in the electronic medical record. Escalate complex, high-risk, or time-sensitive cases to anesthesia, surgical, or operational leadership to support safe patient care and reliable procedural throughput. Perform these duties over a 40-hour schedule in a multidisciplinary anesthesia environment within Boston Medical Center.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
- Current or eligible Massachusetts Nurse Practitioner license
- Current national board certification as a Nurse Practitioner in an appropriate population focus, such as Adult-Gerontology, Family, Acute Care, or other area acceptable to the department and credentialing process
- Current BLS certification
- Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA registration, as applicable to clinical practice and institutional requirements
- Eligibility for appointment, credentialing, and privileging as an Advanced Practice Provider at Boston Medical Center Brighton, as applicable
- Current ACLS certification or ability to obtain within a timeframe determined by the department
- Additional certification or training relevant to perioperative medicine, internal medicine, critical care, cardiology, anesthesia, or surgical patient optimization
- Minimum of 1–2 years clinical nursing experience, ideally in a critical care or acute care setting
- Strong clinical judgment and decision-making ability
- Exceptional critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities, particularly in high pressure situations
- In-depth knowledge of anesthesia principles, techniques, medications, and equipment
- Proficiency in utilizing anesthesia technology, monitoring devices, and electronic medical records systems
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with diverse healthcare professionals and interact with patients and their families
- Commitment to ongoing professional development, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of current anesthesia practices, research, and advancements
- Boston Medical Center vaccination status against COVID-19 and flu, as well as receive a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine
Desired Qualifications
- Clinical experience sufficient to independently perform preoperative assessment, patient education, care coordination, and documentation within the nurse practitioner scope of practice
- Experience evaluating adult patients with common acute and chronic medical conditions in a hospital, ambulatory, surgical, perioperative, internal medicine, emergency medicine, critical care, cardiology, or procedural setting
- Ideally in a critical care or acute care setting
