Job Summary
Perform comprehensive patient assessments via phone or in person, including phlebotomy, medication administration, and complex procedures like conscious sedation and chemotherapy. Triage and prioritize incoming telephone calls using clinical assessment skills, then document all interventions and assessments in the patient medical record. Manage urgent or emergent medical situations in accordance with organizational protocols for cardiac arrests and operate emergency equipment as needed. Serve as a resource for staff and physicians for daily problem solving and decision-making while delegating tasks to Licensed Practical Nurses and Medical Assistants. Initiate and coordinate patient education to ensure understanding and return demonstration, and participate in community outreach or specialty-related educational programs. Maintain a safe work environment by ensuring OSHA compliance and supervising medical equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
- Registered Professional Nurse licensure in the State of Illinois
- Certification in Basic CPR
- Current experience within past five years or new nursing graduate within past two years
- If less than six months experience, approval required from NMG Director of Professional Development
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, physicians, clinical and administrative units
- Ability to use appropriate judgment, independent thinking and creativity when resolving patient care issues
- Ability to perform patient assessments via phone or in person
- Ability to implement nursing interventions
- Ability to initiate & organize patient education
- Ability to perform phlebotomy
- Ability to administer medication
- Ability to measure vital signs
- Ability to prepare lab specimens
- Ability to perform conscious sedation
- Ability to administer chemotherapy
- Ability to perform inseminations
- Ability to fill and adjust implantable pain pumps
- Ability to perform excision and drainage of wounds
- Ability to interpret and define abnormalities detected in tests and procedures
- Ability to take appropriate remedial action
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with other clinical and administrative departments
- Ability to coordinate appropriate patient care
- Ability to communicate with outside agencies or facilities
- Ability to triage and prioritize incoming telephone calls

- Ability to obtain and/or operate emergency equipment
- Ability to serve as a resource for staff and physicians for daily problem solving and decision-making
- Ability to delegate appropriate tasks according to Illinois law and organizational protocols to Licensed Practical Nurses and Medical Assistants
- Ability to make recommendations to management regarding new policies and procedures
- Ability to assure that new policies and procedures are implemented in a timely manner
- Ability to provide teaching to staff on both a formal and informal basis
- Ability to participate in community outreach education, patient support groups or specialty-related educational programs offered to hospital and community nurses
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred (may be required for some roles within Oncology)
- 1-2 years' experience in ambulatory or acute care
