Job Summary
Diagnose and treat acute, episodic, or chronic illnesses by analyzing patient histories, symptoms, and diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses. Order, perform, or interpret diagnostic tests including lab work and x-rays, while prescribing medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost. Educate patients on self-management of their conditions, tailoring instructions to individual circumstances. Utilize computer applications to manage large amounts of information, create databases, and generate reports. Operate electrocardiography EKG units, portable EKG machines, electronic blood pressure monitors, and pediatric blood pressure cuffs. Requires registered nurses with specialized graduate education.
Required Qualifications
- Must be registered nurses
- Must have specialized graduate education
- Must be able to analyze and interpret patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses
- Must be able to diagnose or treat acute health care problems, such as illnesses, infections, or injuries
- Must be able to recommend diagnostic or therapeutic interventions with attention to safety, cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence, and efficacy
- Must be able to prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized
- Must be able to educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances
- Must be able to prescribe medication dosages, routes, and frequencies, based on such patient characteristics as age and gender
- Must be able to use a computer application to manage large amounts of information, including creating and editing simple databases, inputting data, retrieving specific records, and creating reports to communicate the information
- Must be able to use scroll bars, a mouse, and dialog boxes to work within the computer's operating system
- Must be able to access and switch between applications and files of interest
