Job Summary

Machine, fit, and assemble component parts and precision tooling to build special-purpose machinery, robotic work cells, and factory automation projects. Set up and operate machine tools like manual lathes and small mills to support assembly, while coordinating team activities for bench and floor integration. Engage with engineering on concept development, provide labor estimates, and lead small-to-medium projects from start to finish. Proceed with floor assembly per layout, run debug/integration checks, and perform rework to ensure minimal budget impact. Provide mechanical support during customer site installations, train apprentices, and fill in for Intermediate Toolmakers as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • A Certificate of Qualification as a Machine Tool Builder and Integrator or Tool and Die Maker or equivalent certifications from other Provinces or Countries
  • Completion of a Certificate of Apprenticeship and Certificate of Qualification in the above-mentioned trades
  • Experience in integrating and assembly of custom factory automation
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Practical working knowledge of the operation of all toolroom equipment
  • Proficient understanding of the tracking system
  • Ability to recognize function and relationship of all details within mechanical assemblies
  • Ability to run small to medium projects
  • Ability to support Intermediate Toolmakers as a right hand
  • Ability to fill in temporarily in Intermediate Toolmakers absence
  • Ability to lead a team and push small to medium projects
  • Ability to program cell/station with low to medium complexity successfully to completion
  • Ability to engage with engineering team in concept development of small to medium projects
  • Ability to provide labour estimates for group leader/manager review
  • Ability to work in a team environment with other mechanical assembly personnel as well as electricians, programmers and any other people or department required to complete the project
  • Ability to machine details, applying tolerances on prints
  • Understanding of GD & T and where to apply
  • Ability to proceed with floor assembly according to floor plan layout
  • Ability to assemble the job in a safe and proper order according to procedures
  • Ability to participate in the debug/integration of the line
  • Ability to check preliminary station set up before programmers are scheduled to begin
  • Ability to check to see if cycle times are achievable
  • Ability to advise Lead Toolmaker of potential problems
  • Ability to run the entire line with team and others to check functionality of operator stations, operator interface, loading and unloading areas and guarding for ease of maintenance
  • Ability to perform rework efficiently to ensure minimal impact to budget and schedule
  • Ability to ensure that all rework is properly recorded
  • Ability to assemble and assist in testing activities related to construction of CSA B51 and CSA N285.0 pressure boundary components within the ATS Certificate of Authorization if applicable
  • Ability to strictly follow CSA N285/NQA Quality requirements as defined within the manual and procedures
  • Ability to provide mechanical support during the duration of debug/integration and acceptance
  • Ability to participate in tear down and shipping of the equipment
  • Ability to dismantle in an orderly fashion to minimize the installation time at customer's site
  • Ability to be an ambassador for ATS at the customer's site
  • Ability to provide quick and efficient installation of the equipment
  • Ability to follow all safety procedures according to the ATS Health and Safety Manual
  • Ability to follow any onsite customer health and safety procedures
  • Ability to reassemble equipment to the point of buy-off at customer's site
  • Ability to provide customer training as required
  • Ability to fill out daily site reports
  • Ability to work with the group leader/manager to be a positive, motivating force within the team
  • Ability to train apprentices according to the ATS manufacturing standards and the Machine Tool Builder and Integrator apprenticeship training standards
  • Ability to communicate and be a channel of any constructive or objective ideas that arise
  • Ability to help keep the manufacturing standards up-to-date and at the highest level
  • Ability to use the team as a pool of technical knowledge, solving problems together efficiently
  • Ability to ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct
  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Ability to adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures
  • Willingness to travel as required to the customer job site
