Job Summary
Shipyard project role for shipfitters/structural fitters performing steel structural work in all stages of new marine vessel construction. Requires reading and interpreting blueprints and drawings, knowledge of ship terminology and welding symbols, fabricating templates, squaring plates, and installing perpendiculars on ships. Must use oxy-acetylene cutting, hand and power tools, and comply with OSHA safety practices; must be physically able to wear PPE and work in a shipyard environment. Requires three years of related experience and ability to work with US customary and metric measurements; is a long-term project with per-diem consideration. Positions available in Ingleside, TX and Brownsville, TX; apply in person.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence
- Comprehensive understanding of ship new construction terminology and ship compartment location nomenclature
- Physically and medically capable of wearing PPE per OSHA standards
- Ability to effectively confer job related information to the structural supervisor
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings (including weld symbols)
- Experience fabricating templates, squaring plates, scribing in structures, and installing perpendiculars on ships in accordance with drawings
- Experience using oxy-acetylene torch for cutting and washing
- Experience using hand and power tools safely
- Knowledge of structural shop fabrication equipment (shears, punches, come alongs, brakes)
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic in US customary units and metric measurements
- Three years of related experience
- Compliance with OSHA standards and shipyard safety practices
- Appropriate PPE must always be worn
