Job Summary
Specialty Welders (Alum, CuNi, Stainless; TIG) — Journeyperson needed for shipyard project in San Diego. Responsible for welding pipe of various metals on ships or in a shop to support mechanical repairs and modernization of marine vessels including US Naval, Military Sealift Command, and commercial ships. Provides direction to assigned helpers. Requires four years of pipe welding experience, shipyard familiarity, and the ability to read instructions and drawings. Must pass weld tests for Alum, CuNi, Stainless or TIG; familiar with SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW/GTAW theory; capable of certifying in P-3 joint and P-14 socket welds. Must interpret drawings, comply with OSHA PPE standards, and follow shipyard safety practices. Duties include hot work prep, inspection, documentation, and quality evidence as required by work specifications. Work environment varies from indoors shops to shipyards with PPE mandatory; second shift (2nd shift) 40 hours/week with overtime on approval.
Required Qualifications
- Must pass the Alum, CuNi, Stainless or TIG weld test
- Four (4) years of pipe welding experience
- Shipyard experience is required
- Must be able to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence
- Must have working knowledge of ship repair terminology and ship compartment naming convention
- Must be physically and medically capable to wear PPE per OSHA standards
- Must be able to certify in P-3 joint with permanent backing ring, and P-14 socket weld joint (SMAW, GTAW, FCAW or Silver Brazing)
- Must be able to interpret drawings, specifications, and Navy/MSC/ABS standard items and manuals
- Must possess working knowledge of equipment and work processes used in marine pipe welding
- Must be able to operate and care for welding equipment and hand tools
- Must be able to perform basic arithmetic and understand US customary and metric measurement systems
