Job Summary
Shipfitter – 1st Class responsible for performing steel structural work in all stages of new construction of marine vessels with minimal supervision. Requires reading blueprints, interpreting structural drawings, and following job specifications. Must comply with OSHA standards and wear PPE; experienced with oxy-acetylene and plasma cutting, fabricating templates, squaring plates, and installing perpendiculars on ships. Three years of related experience and ability to work with US customary measurements and metric system. Housing assistance and per-diem available for a long-term shipyard project; overtime opportunities. Bilingual Spanish skills noted.
Required Qualifications
- Three (3) years of related experience
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings (including weld symbols)
- Comprehensive understanding of ship construction terminology and ship compartment nomenclature
- Experience reading blueprints and drawings
- Ability to effectively convey job-related information to supervisors and small groups
- OSHA standards compliance and PPE usage
- Ability to read measurements in US customary and metric systems
- Experience fabricating templates, squaring plates, scribing in structures, and installing perpendiculars on ships
- Experience using oxy-acetylene torch and plasma for cutting
- Experience using hand and power tools safely
- Knowledge of ship terminology and construction procedures
