Job Summary
Shipfitter – 1st Class at a Florida shipyard performing steel structural work in all stages of marine vessel construction. Requires reading blueprints and structural drawings (including weld symbols), interpreting job specifications, and fabricating/assembling components with oxy-acetylene/plasma cutting and hand/power tools. Must understand ship terminology, be able to read measurements in US customary and metric systems, wear all required PPE per OSHA standards, and communicate in Spanish. This is a long-term project with housing assistance available, per-diem for qualifying individuals, and overtime opportunities (M-Th 10 hours, Fri 8 hours, with some Sat/Sun). Required Qualifications
- Three (3) years of related experience
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings (including weld symbols)
- Experience fabricating templates, squaring plates, scribing in structures, and installing perpendiculars on ships in accordance with drawings, specifications
- Experience using oxy-acetylene torch and Plasma for cutting and washing
- Experience using hand and power tools safely including but not limited to mauls, grinders, circular and reciprocating saws, and hand and magnetic drill
- Understand proper use and operation of structural shop fabrication equipment
- Comprehensive understanding of ship new construction terminology and ship compartment location nomenclature
- Be physically and medically capable of wearing all required PPE under OSHA standards
- Ability to read blueprints and follow directions
- May require reading measurements (US customary and metric)
- Must comply with OSHA standards and shipyard safety practices
- Able to communicate in Spanish (Se habla español)
