Job Summary

Now Hiring: Sheetmetal Fitter Journeyperson for a Ship Repair project in San Diego, CA. The role involves performing sheet metal repairs and installations on maritime vessels (Navy, MSC, commercial) with minimal supervision. Responsibilities include reading blueprints and job specs, fabricating and installing shipboard sheet metal structures, and ensuring quality through CFR reporting and adherence to NAVSEA/ABS/Coast Guard standards. Must be able to interpret structural drawings, use hand/power tools and fabricating machines (shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, routers), tack weld with SMAW or GMAW, and operate within OSHA safety guidelines. Six years of related experience in a maritime environment is required. Duties include conducting preproduction inspections, maintaining safety and cleanliness, coordinating with supervisors and helpers, and ensuring repairs and installations meet drawings and specifications. The position requires physical fitness for a shipyard environment, including lifting, climbing, working at heights, confined spaces, and exposure to noise. Shift is 1st shift at 40 hours per week with OT available pending HM approval.

Required Qualifications

  • Six (6) years of related experience
  • shipyard experience
  • read and interpret structural drawings, sketches, and specifications
  • interpret NAVSEA, ABS, Coast Guard standards and manufacturer’s tech manuals
  • experience repairing and installing shipboard habitability spaces including berthing equipment; galley equipment; ventilation ducting; and joiner doors
  • tack welding using SMAW or GMAW
  • ability to write CFRs describing material condition and corrective action
  • ability to communicate with supervisor and helpers
  • ability to measure, lay out, and mark structures from drawings or sketches
  • comprehend instructions and general correspondence
  • understand ship repair terminology and compartment nomenclature
  • competence with hand and power tools and fabricating machines
  • compute basic arithmetic in US customary and metric systems
  • ability to work OSHA safety standards
  • demonstrate physical capability for PPE and shipyard conditions
  • perform duty tasks including cleaning, inspections, and OQE submission
