Job Summary
Outside Machinist Journeyperson for a ship repair project in San Diego, CA. Responsible for removing, installing, and testing main and auxiliary shipboard equipment (e.g., main reduction gears, pumps, valves, hydraulic and steam systems, propellers, bearings) on maritime vessels including US Navy, Military Sealift Command, and commercial. Read and interpret specifications and drawings, comply with NAVSEA standards and OSHA PPE, and produce CFR/condition reports. Coordinate with other crafts, supervise helpers, perform valve repairs, align equipment, conduct operational tests, and document results. Requires six years machinist experience with at least two in a maritime environment.
Required Qualifications
- Six (6) years of machinist experience, two (2) of which in the maritime environment
- Shipyard experience is required
- Must be able to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence
- Must be able to write comprehensive CFRs describing material condition and recommended corrective action
- Must be able to interpret drawings, sketches, tech manuals, and user manuals
- Must understand NAVSEA standards 009-04, 009-23, and 009-24
- Must understand Lock-out/Tag-out procedures
- Must understand laser alignment and reverse indicator alignment procedures
- Must be able to use precision measurement tools
- Must be able to read and comprehend specifications and drawings
- Must be physically capable of wearing PPE per OSHA standards
- Must be able to coordinate with other crafts and supervise helpers
- Must be able to prepare safe work areas and document work with OQE/condition reports
