Job Summary
Instruct classes or lead recreation activities while creating daily plans within established guidelines and curriculum. Oversee participant safety, comfort, and progress by adapting activities to individual needs and preparing required equipment. Complete class records, progress reports, and certificates; communicate with parents and patrons to address concerns. Respond to accidents according to procedure and act as a Mandatory Reporter for incidents of child abuse or neglect. Set up, take down, and clean up after each session. Perform other job-related duties as assigned under the direction of the Aquatic Coordinator.
Required Qualifications
- Currently attending high school, or High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Some previous work, training/certification or volunteer experience related to position
- Any satisfactory combination of education, experience and training
- Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or American Coaches Certification Level 1
- Strong Knowledge of: Learning development, stroke technique, water safety, program levels and teaching methods, practices and progressions
- Strong personal swimming skills
- Strict adherence to safety guidelines related to assignment
- Effective supervision and customer service best practices
- Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures for assignment
- Demonstrate leadership, organizational, planning and problem solving skills
- Lead, motivate and direct others
- Exercise initiative and independent decision making
- Demonstrate a high level of competency and expertise in program area
- Actively participate in all activities
- Demonstrate organizational and time management skills
- Demonstrate planning and problem-solving skills
- Communicate effectively with others both verbally and in writing
- Work cooperatively with others and create a positive, constructive, and respectful relationship with staff and the general public
- Manage emergency/crisis situations
- Operate computer programs as well as staying current with new programs and operate common office equipment
- Work independently with minimum direction while also working as part of a team and collaborating with others
- Position may require being in and out of water and constantly using the voice in an often noisy environment
- Depending on program, duties may be performed either indoors or outdoors, which may include working in extreme weather conditions
- Work schedule is varied and may require evenings, weekends and holidays
- Hours vary depending upon specific program needs
- The flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all of the time
- Physical exertion includes frequent walking, bending and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling and kneeling in order to deliver equipment and supplies
- Job stress may include dealing with crowds, uncooperative participants, difficult individuals, exposure to illness and periods of continuous demand
