Job Summary
Edit major enterprise pieces and breaking news, launching reporters on live stories and managing first and second reads for structure, framing, balance, grammar, and style. Coordinate story deployment, monitor sources for breaking news, and generate ideas demonstrating solid news judgment. Supervise reporters to shape stories and lift copy while collaborating with visuals, audience, and other desk teams. Stay current on new story forms and digital innovations. Work weekdays from afternoon through evening, stepping in at all stages from conception to publication. Report to a Politics Editor.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years editing experience at a journalism or media company
- Experience working independently in high-pressure, deadline-driven newsrooms -- including coverage and workflow, as an editor
- Writing/editing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment
- Experience working independently and setting priorities when breaking news demands attention
- Proficiency in all aspects of digital production
- You are currently expected to work weekdays, from afternoon through evening
- You must be capable of stepping in at all stages of the editing process, from a story's conception through its publication
- This is an in-office position, based in New York
- regular attendance in the office four days each week
