NF Retail Scale Operator

Job Summary

Conduct scale operations for incoming and outgoing ferrous and non-ferrous scrap loads, weighing and grading materials per ISRI specifications. Direct customers to unloading areas, facilitate inbound payment, and communicate pricing with production crews while ensuring strict compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. Test equipment for accuracy, complete DMV forms, and coordinate with office personnel for transaction documentation. Maintain a safe environment for employees and visitors, reporting malfunctions to supervisors and supporting internal control processes. Work directly with the Stockpiling Supervisor, Commercial department, and customers using face-to-face, electronic, and radio communication.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED Certification
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in a similar role or scrap industry
  • Ability to develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with customers and other employees
  • Mathematical and problem solving skills
  • Basic negotiation skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Basic typing skills
  • 18 years of age or older (U.S. applicants)
  • 16 years of age or older (Canada applicants)
  • Satisfactory completion of a post-offer drug screen
  • Satisfactory completion of a background check
  • Satisfactory completion of a credit check (if position specified)
  • Review and sign an Arbitration Agreement
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to crouch or bend at the knees occasionally
  • Ability to climb vertical steps occasionally
  • Ability to stoop or bend at the waist occasionally
  • Ability to reach at arm's length frequently or overhead occasionally

  • Must be able to conduct scale operations and evaluate incoming products
  • Must be able to operate the incoming scale to determine weight
  • Must be able to direct customers to appropriate areas for unloading
  • Must be able to operate outgoing scale
  • Must be able to identify commodity codes
  • Must be able to compute ticket totals for payment
  • Must be able to complete all appropriate DMV forms for all cars that enter yard within required time frame
  • Must be able to communicate scrap quality and acceptance procedures to customers
  • Must be able to ensure strict compliance with current regulations and policies
  • Must be able to test in and out-bound scales for accuracy
  • Must be able to report all equipment malfunctions to the appropriate supervisor
  • Must be able to understand, communicate and comply with defined internal controls
  • Must be able to suggest and make modifications to the policies, procedures and controls
  • Must be able to relate to the business
  • Must be able to have direct contact with the Stockpiling Supervisor
  • Must be able to have direct contact with the Commercial department
  • Must be able to have direct contact with customers
  • Must be able to have direct contact with operations production employees
  • Must be able to communicate by speech and hearing continually
  • Must be able to adhere to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards
  • Must be able to provide a safe environment for all employees, customers and visitors
  • Must be able to assist current and potential customers with questions regarding the pricing of materials and types of material accepted
  • Must be able to maintain account contacts to promote customer service on a regular basis
  • Must be able to identify contents of each load
  • Must be able to communicate the pricing of materials with production crews and customers
  • Must be able to possess knowledge of metals identification and grading according to ISRI specifications
  • Must be able to deliver exceptional customer service
