Job Summary
Gather, write, and edit news material while assembling show rundowns and creating graphics. Generate story ideas, produce packages for air, and coordinate with reporters on presentations. Take the show into the control room to time it with commercial breaks and operate broadcast production equipment. Participate in editorial meetings, contribute ideas on show content, and oversee special projects or live coverage of station events. Adapt to a fast-paced environment to cover breaking news and establish contacts for newsgathering. Primary work occurs in the newsroom and field, with occasional studio time.
Required Qualifications
- Selects stories, assembles them in a rundown, creates graphics, writes and copy edits the stories and coordinates with reporters on reporter presentations
- Takes the show into the control room and timing it to include commercial breaks
- Enterprising and self-motivated
- Able to work independently to develop newscasts or assigned production
- Thorough understanding of all journalistic standards
- Thorough understanding of broadcast production techniques used to create visual and compelling on-air and online content
- Strong writing and communications skills
- Ability to write news copy clearly, in broadcast style, for on-air, online, and other digital platforms
- Able to assemble news material in a logical and organized fashion
- Able to present finished stories in a professional and engaging manner
- Strong writing and producing skills
- Ability to adapt to a fast paced quickly changing environment
- Able to react in live situations to cover breaking news
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with peers and superiors
- Ability to develop contacts outside the building to aid in newsgathering
- Ability to operate various broadcast production equipment
- Ability to operate communication equipment (intercom systems, microphones, newsroom computer system, video screening computers, cellular telephones, laptop computers or tablet devices)
- Bachelor's Degree in journalism or related field
