New Products Mechanical Design Engineer

On-siteSouth San Francisco, California, United States

Full TimeSmallLOGISTICS

Job Summary

Own end-to-end mechanical subsystem delivery from concept through production release and field deployment, translating mission requirements into concrete designs, CAD, tolerance stacks, and verification plans. Produce drawings, GD&T, BOMs, and supplier specifications while driving test campaigns to validate structural and mechanism performance against acceptance criteria. Use first-principles analysis and FEA to predict loads and fatigue life, then rapidly prototype in-shop to convert validated designs into producible hardware. Collaborate daily with cross-functional teams to resolve tradeoffs and deliver measurable outcomes like reduced subsystem mass and demonstrated target MTBF. This onsite role at the engineering lab/manufacturing campus requires frequent hands-on build and test work, regular participation in flight-test campaigns, and periodic travel to launch/field sites.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years designing mechanical systems for aerospace, robotics, automotive, or similarly demanding hardware programs
  • Direct experience moving hardware from prototype to production
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with composite or metallic structural design and/or precision mechanisms
  • Experience providing concrete examples of subsystems owned
  • Proficiency in CAD (NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent)
  • Proficiency in GD&T
  • Proficiency in FEA workflow for structural substantiation
  • Familiarity with test methods for fatigue, environmental, and life testing
  • Experience producing production drawings
  • Experience producing BOMs
  • Experience producing supplier specs
  • Experience participating in supplier qualification processes
  • Experience participating in change-control processes
  • Onsite availability at the engineering lab/manufacturing campus
  • Willingness to participate in frequent hands-on build and test work
  • Willingness to participate in flight-test campaigns
  • Willingness to travel periodically to launch/field sites
  • Rigorous first-principles problem solving
  • Data-driven validation mindset
  • Willingness to work at the bench alongside technicians during iterative test cycles

Desired Qualifications

  • Python or MATLAB for data analysis
  • Experience with bonded composite manufacturing
  • Experience with automated layup
  • Prior responsibility for structural substantiation or certification artifacts
  • Prior work on safety-critical aircraft subsystems
  • Patents
  • Commercialized products
  • Exceptional personal engineering projects demonstrating creativity and craftsmanship
