Job Summary

Configure, install and maintain IT networking (wired and wireless) infrastructure across the University building estate. Monitor networking infrastructure and performance, undertake proactive maintenance, investigate and resolve faults and service-impacting incidents. Provide hardware/software support for network equipment; install and update configurations; plan installations and liaise with stakeholders on changes to ensure services remain available. Coordinate and support operational network delivery projects (e.g., network refresh and modernisation) including collaboration with third-party wireless design partners. Create and maintain technical documentation and knowledge base articles for end users. Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical staff, students and visitors to deliver excellent customer service. Provide an interface between Network Services and Frontline Support teams with advice on service issues. Collate and analyse incident data to support problem classification and continual service improvement. Act as a key contact within the team for a given technical specialism (e.g., Wireless, SDN, UPS management, IOS upgrades) and share knowledge with team members to ensure best practices. Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Required Qualifications

  • A good general education to A Level (or equivalent)
  • Experience of supporting a Cisco based networking infrastructure including the configuration, implementation and administration of access switches and wireless access points
  • Ability to terminate, test and troubleshoot copper network cabling infrastructure; familiarity with optical fibre cabling is beneficial but not essential
  • Knowledge of health and safety working procedures and criteria
  • Experience coordinating operational projects to deploy changes to networking infrastructure, prioritising and delegating work
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for frontline interactions and technical discussions
  • Ability to manage conflicting demands in a multi-skilled team and meet deadlines
  • Ability to quickly recognise, analyse and solve problems and propose alternatives
  • Ability to update knowledge of relevant subject areas and keep abreast of technological developments
  • Knowledge and experience of scripting languages and automation tools (e.g. Python)
  • A clean driving licence
  • Ability to work outside of normal business hours to support maintenance and project tasks
