Job Summary
Design and maintain robust, scalable customer-facing REST APIs and backend services using Python. Own core product architecture end-to-end, ensuring high availability, performance, and stringent security standards for compliance and business verification platforms. Develop high-performance data ingestion, web scraping, and parsing layers to process real-time data while architecting distributed system workflows with asynchronous processing and event-driven mechanisms. Manage and optimize relational database models under high load within cloud environments. Collaborate in an agile, product-minded engineering environment to ship code frequently and drive technical best practices. This role involves working closely with a UK-based fintech startup in Porto, Portugal, to build innovative solutions that actively change things for the better.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience with a proven track record of owning systems end-to-end in production
- 3+ years of strong hands-on experience with Python (or a similar backend language with total willingness to work primarily in Python)
- Strong fundamentals in distributed systems: asynchronous processing, message queues, pub/sub, idempotency, retries, and eventual consistency
- Solid experience designing and versioning clean, developer-friendly RESTful APIs
- Advanced knowledge of relational database modeling and query performance (PostgreSQL or MySQL)
- Comfortable working in Cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure) with CI/CD deployment pipelines
Desired Qualifications
- Experience developing scalable web scrapers and data parsing pipelines
- Prior experience in regulated/security-sensitive domains (Fintech, KYC/AML, Fraud, Compliance)
- Familiarity with stream processing technologies (Kafka, Pub/Sub, Dataflow, Flink)
- Exposure to low-level languages like Rust, Go, or C++ for performance-critical tasks
