Job Summary
Coordinate and supervise daily crew activities while performing rigging, erecting, and modifying structural steel in the North and South Caverns of the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Visually inspect rigging materials, select appropriate gear based on load specifications, and ensure all lifts comply with DOE-STD-1090-2020 and ASME B30 series standards. Communicate daily with the FFDG representative regarding schedule status and operational concerns, lead or participate in JHAs and toolbox talks, and administer disciplinary action for deficiencies. Guarantee crew PPE compliance and signal workers engaged in hoisting loads to ensure safety. Support two-shift and six-day work schedules while maintaining employee conduct and competence standards.
Required Qualifications
- NCCER Advanced Rigger / Rigger Level II certification (or NCCCO Rigger Level II equivalent)
- 5+ years' experience industrial or heavy-lift rigging experience
- Successfully complete all required FFDG training, including LBNF/DUNE Guide Training for Crew Leads, Site Orientations, and Practical Factors
- Able to manage team members and multiple projects
- Knowledge of reading and interpreting sketches, blueprints, and detailed drawings
- Coordinate tasks according to priorities and plans
- Ensure labor and resources are adequate
- Must pass a background check and do a drug screening
- Capable of performing physically demanding tasks during long shifts
- Skilled in math which includes adding and subtracting fractions
- Prior experience at DOE sites, underground mines, or similar high-hazard environments
- Fall Protection Competent Person, MEWP, First Aid/CPR certifications
- Previous Lead or Foreman experience on multi-shift industrial projects
- Must have a valid driver's license
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs
- Must be available for weekend shifts
- Must be available for two-shift (day/night) and six-day work schedules
- Must be able to work primarily underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD
- Must comply with all applicable safety regulations, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and Loenbro's Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) policies
- Must be able to work in extreme cold and hot temperatures
- Must be able to work in underground conditions
- Must be able to fit and move in confined spaces including tanks and vessels
- Must be able to work on limited working surfaces
- Must be able to work in areas with exposure to noise above 85 decibels and intense odors
- Must be able to work in areas with limited visibility
- Must wear company identifiable attire with logo on SURF property
- Must be able to lead or participate in daily JHAs / toolbox talks and exercise stop-work authority
- Must be able to signal or verbally communicate with workers and others engaged in hoisting, suspending, and moving loads
- Must be able to guarantee all safety precautions and quality standards are followed
- Must be able to ensure crew PPE compliance (Type II hard hat with chin strap, Level IV cut-resistant gloves, reflective clothing, steel-toe boots, self-rescuer, and 4-gas monitor when acting as Guide)
- Must be well-organized and favor safety above everything else
- Must be able to direct the work of others and make quick decisions
- Must be able to visually inspect and test rigging materials to ensure safety and reliability
- Must be able to select appropriate gear such as cables, pulleys, vices, winches, etc. according to load weights and sizes, work area, and job specifications
- Must be able to ensure all lifts comply with DOE-STD-1090-2020, ASME B30 series, and project-specific lift plans
- Must be able to maintain satisfactory standards of employee conduct, integrity, and competence
- Must be able to administer disciplinary action regarding deficiencies
- Must be able to support removal of personnel when requested in writing by FFDG
- Must be able to be aware of obstacles, surrounding structures, barriers or objects and the location of other people
- Must be able to communicate daily with the FFDG representative regarding schedule status, operational concerns, and crew performance
- Must be able to coordinate and supervise daily activities of crew while working as a productive member of that crew
- Must be able to dismantle, inspect, clean, organize and store rigging equipment after use
- Must be able to supervise and train workers
- Must be able to maintain schedule adherence
- Must be able to uphold employee conduct and competence standards
