Job Summary

Temporary, part-time tutor with NC Education Corps at Love Memorial Elementary School. Provides small-group tutoring (groups of 1-4 students) during the school day for K-5 students, at least three days per week, with 30-minute sessions. Tasks include high-dosage tutoring planning (minimum three sessions per week), monitoring progress, creating and using learning aids, maintaining a tutoring log, and reporting progress to the classroom teacher and supervisor. Roles operate under supervision of a classroom teacher and/or tutor lead, involving collaboration with school staff, parents, and administrators. Requires knowledge of effective methods for working with students, core subjects, understanding of school organization and student behavior, ability to operate audiovisual/office equipment, and capability to maintain confidentiality. The position involves heavy lifting duties as part of the work, and emphasizes instructional support, behavior management, and data sharing with NC Education Corps partners. Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of effective methods of working with students
  • Working knowledge of the core subjects at the grade level to which the employment assignment is made
  • Some knowledge of the school organization and its community
  • Some knowledge of expected behavior of students and basic characteristics of ages and stages
  • Skill necessary to operate audiovisual and technological equipment and common office machines
  • Skill to make learning aids which will strengthen lesson plans
  • Ability to discern significant student behavior and refer this to the supervisor
  • Ability to impart information to the student’s level of comprehension
  • Ability to apply, impartially and consistently, proper methods of recognition, reward and punishment
  • Ability to solve independently most minor problems
  • Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision
  • Ability to record and store data accurately
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with parents, students, teachers, staff, and administrators
  • The employee provides support to the teacher in the instruction of students
  • Responsibilities: A wide variety of tasks are performed to support the teacher in the teaching learning process for students
  • The work is directed by specific instructions, precedents and established policy
  • Problems are solved through the exercise of judgment in selecting the best course of action to be taken
  • The work is performed under the limited supervision of the teacher and/or principal
  • Duties:
  • Gives small group instruction (up to 4 students per group) as prescribed by teacher
  • Provides individualized supplemental instruction as directed by the classroom teacher
  • Plans for high dosage (at least 3 sessions/week; 30 minutes per session) tutoring services
  • Demonstrates various instructional activities
  • Monitors student progress using a prescribed tutoring log
  • Checks and corrects students' work while in progress
  • Keeps students on task
  • Reinforces core instruction as taught by the classroom teacher
  • Reports student progress to teacher
  • Attends initial training sessions provided by NC Education Corps
  • Participates in ongoing learning and professional coaching support as provided by NC Education Corps
  • Distributes and collects instructional materials
  • Records student behavior and learning outcomes
  • Shares data as identified by NC Education Corps partners
  • Supervises students in a small group classroom setting
  • Creates and distributes awards for positive behavior
  • Teaches citizenship, social skills and respect for others
  • Reconciles minor student conflicts
  • Disciplines misbehavior through approved methods
  • Reports discipline problems to teacher or principal
  • Reports to supervisor significant change or lack of change in student behavior
  • Other duties as assigned
