Job Summary
Conduct field assessments of local ecology in utility Right-of-Way corridors, performing species identification and documentation, water/soil sample collection, and mapping using GPS and ArcGIS. Execute non-lethal butterfly surveys in the San Joaquin Valley while operating vehicles such as 4x4s and ATVs in rugged terrain and all weather conditions. Work independently or in small teams across a wide geographic region, requiring 100% travel including overnight and multi-week trips. This role supports ACRT Pacific's mission to foster environmental stewardship and resiliency for utility infrastructure nationwide.
Required Qualifications
- 3-5 years' experience in conducting non-lethal butterfly surveys in the San Joaquin Valley of California
- College degree in ecology, biology, natural resources, environmental science, or a related field
- 3-5 years experience in conducting non-lethal butterfly surveys in the San Joaquin Valley of California (in lieu of a degree)
- 2+ years of relevant ecological field experience in lieu of a degree
- Must be physically able and willing to work outdoors in all weather and terrain
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to work independently or in a small team in remote locations
- Effective communication and documentation skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Comfortable operating vehicles (4x4, ATVs)
- Experience identifying local flora and fauna
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs
- Required up to 100% travel (including overnight and multi-week travel)
- Exposure to rugged terrain, extreme weather, noise, and environmental hazards
Desired Qualifications
- Experience conducting biological field surveys
- Experience with botany, plant identification, or invertebrates
- Familiarity with ArcGIS (Field Maps, Survey123) or GPS-based data collection
- Experience with environmental field equipment (e.g., camera traps, range finders, acoustic sampling equipment)
- Exposure to regulatory compliance and reporting under environmental laws
- Previous work with utility companies, government agencies, or private ecological firms
- Ability to adapt to changing schedules and work within a wide geographic region
