National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Intervention Specialist (988 Operator)

Job Summary

Screen for suicidal intent and assess the immediate safety of individuals in crisis, utilizing nonjudgmental communication to de-escalate situations involving children and adults. Actively listen, implement safety plans, coordinate emergency services, and document all client interactions while providing resources for housing, food, and utilities. Offer follow-up support to high-risk callers and assist concerned third parties such as family members or neighbors. Work with supervisors to ensure quality care and effective crisis resolution. This on-site role at NorthKey Community Care in Covington, KY requires 1st shift hours from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, including holidays and weekends, for candidates with at least one year of crisis intervention experience.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 1 year working with individuals experiencing crisis and/or experience providing crisis intervention services
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Crisis de-escalation skills
  • Building rapport with individuals in immediate crisis
  • Ability to work under pressure with individuals (could include both children and adults) in immediate crisis who could be actively talking about suicide
  • Active listening to individuals, assessing their needs, implementing safety plans, coordinating emergency services when necessary, and documenting interactions
  • Provide resources as needed based on assessment of needs (for example, connecting them to services for utilities, homeless services, food pantries, housing, and other community resources)
  • Provide follow-up support to high-risk callers reporting suicidal or homicidal thoughts or behaviors
  • Work with other team members and supervisors to ensure quality care and effective crisis resolution
  • Provide support to concerned third parties who are worried about someone at risk of suicide
  • Accurately and efficiently document all client interactions
  • Must be available for holidays and weekend hours

Desired Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in human/social services
  • Peer Support Certification
  • Prior experience answering National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (988) calls
  • Familiarity with the Northern Kentucky region
