Job Summary
Music Teacher for a middle school in the Uncommon Schools network. Taught through a program grounded in Orff and Kodaly approaches, the role covers singing, movement, instrumental instruction (recorder, Orff instruments, drumming), and music literacy. Responsibilities include implementing network curricula, teaching music content, developing rhythm and pitch notation lessons, planning and coordinating multiple performances, designing assessments, collaborating with enrichment staff, participating in curriculum development, and contributing to school-wide functions. Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, or related field, with experience in general and vocal music for elementary-aged students, proficiency in piano and voice, and preferred experience with Kodaly/Orff pedagogy. Strong classroom management, effective communication with students and families, and alignment with Uncommon’s educational philosophy are essential. Urban public/charter school teaching experience is preferred; state certification is helpful but not required. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music in Music, Music Education or Performance
- Experience teaching general and vocal music to elementary aged children
- Experience with the Kodaly and Orff approaches; levels training in one or both pedagogies highly preferred
- Piano and vocal proficiency; knowledge of recorder; basic guitar
- Valid State Certification is helpful but not required
- Experience performing and/or teaching music is highly preferred
- Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred
- Proven ability to manage large groups and communicate effectively with students and families
