Job Summary
Accomplished Music Teacher needed to implement Orff/Kodály-based instruction for a K-12 oriented program within Uncommon Schools’ network. Responsibilities include teaching general and vocal music (singing, dance, movement, recorder and Orff instruments), developing music literacy (rhythm, pitch notation, solfege, improvisation, composition), planning and delivering assessments, coordinating multiple school-year performances, collaborating with enrichment and operations teams, supporting instructional duties and school-wide functions, and contributing to curriculum development. Requires strong classroom management, effective communication with students and families, and a commitment to Uncommon’s educational philosophy. Compensation ranges from $50,000 to $64,700 with comprehensive benefits; prior urban public or charter school experience is preferred.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music in Music, Music Education or Performance
- Experience teaching general and vocal music to elementary aged children
- Experience with the Kodaly and Orff approaches; Levels training in one or both pedagogies highly preferred
- Valid State Certification is helpful but not required
- Piano and vocal proficiency, knowledge of recorder, basic guitar; additional instrument proficiency helpful
- Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred
- Drive to improve students' minds and lives; ability to collaborate with colleagues
