Job Summary
Music Teacher for a middle school program focusing on general music pedagogy grounded in Orff and Kodaly approaches; responsibilities include teaching singing, movement, instrumental education (recorder, Orff instruments, drumming), developing music literacy and notation skills, planning and conducting performances, collaborating with enrichment staff and leadership, creating assessments, supporting school operations and culture, and communicating with families. Must be able to manage large groups, align with Uncommon’s educational philosophy, and contribute to curriculum development and school-wide functions. Qualifications include a BA/BM in music or education, experience teaching music to elementary-aged students, proficiency in piano/vocals and basic instruments, and strong communication skills; state certification is helpful but not required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music in Music, Music Education or Performance
- Experience teaching general and vocal music to elementary aged children
- Experience with Kodaly and Orff approaches; Levels training preferred
- Ability to manage and direct large groups of students
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Valid State Certification is helpful but not required
- Piano and vocal proficiency, knowledge of recorder, basic guitar
- Experience performing and/or teaching music is highly preferred
- Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred
