Job Summary

Music Teacher needed for a middle school program focused on developing musical talent across K-12, employing Orff and Kodaly approaches. Responsibilities include teaching music content (singing, dance, movement, recorder and Orff instruments), developing music literacy (rhythm, pitch notation, solfege, improvisation, composition), aligning with network curricula, collaborating with enrichment staff and operations to plan performances, designing assessments, providing coverage and supportive duties as needed, participating in curriculum development and school-wide activities, managing classrooms effectively, and communicating with students, families, and colleagues. Must contribute to an engaging school culture and participate in annual orientation and training. Qualification highlights include a BA/BS in Music, Music Education, or Performance, experience teaching elementary-focused music, Kodaly/Orff pedagogy experience, strong communication, and a valid state certification is helpful but not required. Salary ranges from $50,000 to $64,700 with comprehensive benefits; starting pay varies with experience and tenure.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music in Music, Music Education or Performance
  • Experience teaching general and vocal music to elementary aged children
  • Experience with Kodaly and Orff approaches; Levels training preferred
  • Ability to manage large groups of students
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Piano and vocal proficiency; recorder, basic guitar knowledge helpful
  • Belief in Uncommon Schools’ educational philosophy
  • Experience performing and/or teaching music preferred
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in urban public school or charter school setting preferred
  • Drive to improve students’ minds and lives
  • Proven track-record of high achievement in the classroom
