Job Summary

Generate daily story ideas and produce accurate, viewer-focused reporting for newscasts and digital platforms while operating independently in the La Crosse area. Report, shoot, and edit videos; write engaging scripts in AP style; and perform as a live reporter for breaking news and planned coverage. Cultivate community contacts with public safety, government, and business leaders; track emerging issues; conduct interviews; and verify information. Publish stories to the website and social platforms, collaborate on accuracy and fairness, and maintain station equipment. Monitor scanners for breaking news, often working solo in all weather conditions while driving to assignments. Evening, weekend, and holiday shifts may be required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong writing, shooting, and editing skills
  • Proven ability to work independently, make sound editorial decisions, and meet multiple deadlines
  • Comfortable with live reporting and on-camera presentation
  • Strong news judgment and commitment to accuracy, verification, and ethics
  • Proficiency with editing software
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Must be available for evening, weekend, and holiday shifts
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to carry equipment
  • Must be able to drive to assignments
  • Must be able to adapt quickly to breaking news
  • Must be able to operate station equipment, including cameras, lighting, microphones, and editing tools
  • Must be able to monitor scanners and respond quickly to breaking news
  • Must be able to work solo in the field
  • Must be able to balance breaking news, daily coverage, and longer-term enterprise reporting
  • Must be able to produce newscasts as needed
  • Must be able to write clear, accurate, engaging scripts for broadcast and digital in AP style
  • Must be able to report, shoot and edit videos for daily newscasts, digital platforms, and social media
  • Must be able to cultivate and maintain community contacts, including public safety, local government, schools, health care, and business leaders
  • Must be able to track community conversation and emerging issues (online and offline) to generate story ideas
  • Must be able to conduct interviews, verify information, and follow ethical newsgathering and newsroom standards
  • Must be able to publish stories, video, and updates to the website and social platforms with audience-first framing
  • Must be able to collaborate with newsroom leaders and producers to ensure accuracy, context, and fairness
  • Must be able to generate daily story ideas
