Job Summary
Two-semester, 24-week part-time course teaching the study and performance of contemporary/commercial chamber music in various combinations. Ensembles participate in masterclasses and workshops, receive nine coachings, and perform a minimum of one concert per term. Rehearsals are scheduled by availability; individual practice is required and assessed. The course covers practical theory for competent contemporary small-combo performance, including a weekly two-hour class with a one-hour lecture on contemporary theory (7th chord harmony, common chord progressions, modal interchange, and related topics) and a 1-hour workshop where ensembles perform for feedback from instructors, followed by semi-weekly coaching sessions and a final concert. Several written theory quizzes are required each term. The appointment is governed by the Contract Teaching Faculty/Part-time Librarians Collective Agreement. Required Qualifications
- Masters degree in contemporary/jazz performance or significant equivalent performing experience professionally
- Demonstrated experience teaching jazz/contemporary/commercial theory and instructing jazz and jazz-adjacent combos at the post-secondary level
- Demonstrated experience performing professionally as a bandleader and/or sideman with diverse ensembles
