Monitor Technician II

Job Summary
Monitor cardiac rhythms continuously, recognize abnormal heart patterns, and immediately alert nurses or physicians to changes in patient status. Watch monitors for irregularities, respond to alarms indicating shifts in heart rate or rhythm, and document all observations and interventions accurately in medical records. Maintain equipment by performing regular checks, troubleshooting technical issues, and reporting malfunctions. Collaborate with the healthcare team to coordinate patient care and advocate for safety by addressing concerns related to cardiac monitoring. Adhere strictly to hospital policies, procedures, and protocols regarding patient safety and confidentiality.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least 1 year in a .6fte or greater Monitor Technician I position at MUSC
- 1 year of Monitor Technician/Telemetry work experience in a health care facility
- Successful completion of the EKG training/competency during the orientation period
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification
Desired Qualifications
- Additional education or certification in cardiac monitoring or healthcare-related field
- Previous experience as a Monitor Tech or similar role in a healthcare setting
- Familiarity with cardiac rhythms
- Ability to recognize common arrhythmias
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to focus for extended periods while monitoring multiple patients simultaneously
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to interact professionally with patients and healthcare team members
- Ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations
- Ability to respond quickly to emergent situations
- Basic computer skills for data entry and documentation purposes
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
- Visual acuity to accurately read and interpret cardiac rhythms displayed on monitors
- Emotional resilience
- Ability to cope with stress and uncertainty inherent in healthcare environments
