Mobile Engineer III, iOS

On-siteLondon, England, United Kingdom

Full TimeEnterprise

Job Summary

Lead iOS engineering on the Expedia Group Design System by improving existing systems, advocating for engineering value in the design lifecycle, and mentoring junior engineers. Drive complex, well-defined projects that deliver high-quality UI patterns and experiences for travelers and suppliers while enforcing accessibility and performance budgets. Implement sophisticated interactions, animations, and transitions using Swift and SwiftUI, and lead cross-team discussions to align on multi-module system outcomes. Apply AI-first problem-solving with tools like Claude Code to accelerate delivery and raise the bar for AI-assisted development across the team. Own high-level design for iOS systems, select appropriate design patterns, and lead root-cause debugging efforts to ensure code is testable, observable, and optimized.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years with a Bachelor's degree
  • 3+ years with a Master's degree
  • Strong proficiency with Swift, SwiftUI, and Xcode
  • Proficient with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code) as a core, daily part of the engineering workflow
  • Maintained/ran multiple projects/products in production environments (bug fixing, troubleshooting, monitoring, etc.)
  • Experience writing unit tests, creating testable code, and debugging issues using monitoring tools
  • Proficiency with version control systems, such as Git
  • Experience using, and ideally contributing, to design systems
  • Leads design/engineering reviews and enforces accessibility and performance budgets within the iOS design system
  • Implements sophisticated UI interactions, animations, and transitions, with a strong understanding of layout and screen flow
  • Selects among available technology to implement and solve for need
  • Leads cross-team discussions to align on outcomes when projects span team boundaries
  • Owns high-level design (HLD) for multi-module iOS systems
  • Selects and applies the appropriate iOS design pattern (e.g., MVC, MVVM, MVP) across multi-module systems, weighing tradeoffs
  • Tests and monitors code at the project level
  • Builds tracing across modules and leads root-cause debugging efforts
  • Tests, debugs, and fixes issues within established SLAs
  • Designs easily testable and observable software
  • Monitors, instruments, and troubleshoots performance of code (frame rate, memory debugger, performance metrics, battery usage optimization)
  • Leads roadmap tradeoffs across a feature set, weighing sequencing and risk against business need
  • Identifies business problems at the project level and provides solutions
  • Designs how applications integrate with the underlying iOS platform, including offline-ready flows and caching
  • Advocates for the value engineering can add to the design lifecycle
  • Collaborates with UX designers, engineers, and product managers across Expedia Group to identify and develop solutions for new and improved user experiences and interactions
  • Leads team workshops and coaches engineers on design and delivery practices
  • Approaches problem-solving AI-first, using tools such as Claude Code to accelerate development, and shares best practices to help others on the team get the most out of AI tooling
  • Continually seeks new technical skills in an engineering area
  • Shares new skills and knowledge with the team to increase effectiveness
  • Demonstrates knowledge of advanced and relevant iOS technology
  • Is comfortable working with several forms of Apple mobile technologies (different form factors, widgets, Apple Watch)
  • Develops and tests complex or non-routine software applications and related programs and procedures to ensure they meet design requirements
  • Effectively applies knowledge of software design principles, data structures, and/or design patterns and computer science fundamentals to write code that is clean, maintainable, optimized, modular, and with good naming conventions
  • Effectively applies knowledge of API/schema design principles to solve data requirements for iOS experiences
  • Effectively uses an understanding of software frameworks and how to leverage them to write simpler code
  • Leads/clarifies code evolution in code reviews
  • Has a track record of successful collaboration with designers and engineers to create accessible, user-centric solutions
  • Develops prototypes to influence strategy, not just execution, and advises on technical limitations
  • Identifies opportunities to increase efficiency across the feature set or module
  • Owns an iOS-centric approach to analyzing issues, ensuring all components (structure, people, process, and technology) are identified and accounted for
  • Identifies areas of inefficiency in code or systems operation and offers suggestions for improvements
  • Is passionate about iOS technologies and best practices
  • Compiles and reports on major operational or technical initiatives (e.g., Root Cause Analyses) to larger groups, whether via written or oral means
