Job Summary
Pharmacy Technician will act as a patient advocate by ensuring that patients follow their drug therapy plans as prescribed. This is done by assisting the Chief Pharmacist/Pharmacist in duties of preparing and distributing prescription medications that are within the scope of Lewis Drug policy and state and national regulations. Responsibilities include providing prompt, friendly customer service to patients and store customers; learning Lewis Drug policies; building relationships with physicians and providers; answering questions, troubleshooting, and assisting with prescriptions; handling phone inquiries; processing new and refill prescriptions; preparing paperwork and medications for delivery/mail; supporting drive-thru operations; logging into various software systems; maintaining cleanliness; promoting Lewis initiatives; and performing additional duties as assigned. Strong emphasis on teamwork, attention to detail, confidentiality under HIPAA, and ability to learn and apply drug terminology, brand/generic differences, and basic calculations.
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years old
- Must be registered with state Board of Pharmacy prior to first day worked (Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota requirements as applicable)
- Must become nationally certified pharmacy technician within 1 year of BOP registration
- Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification recommended
- High school diploma or GED (Minnesota requirement: 18+ and GED/high school diploma)
- Complete BOP approved Lewis training within 1 year of BOP registration (Minnesota/South Dakota requirements)
- Successful completion of an approved/accredited pharmacy technician program desirable but not required
- Must register with state Board of Pharmacy (BOP) as applicable
- Must be able to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
- Must communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to learn basic drug terminology and differences between brand and generic drugs
- Ability to perform basic pharmaceutical calculations and data entry
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
- Dependable attendance and teamwork in pharmacy operations
- Ability to use multiple software systems for daily technician functions
- Maintain HIPAA confidentiality
- Familiarity with medication delivery, mail-out orders, drive-thru operations
- Knowledge of prescription processing and customer service duties
