Job Summary
Conduct technical inspections under the Building Official's direction to ensure compliance with approved plans, City ordinances, and Minimum Housing Standards. Coordinate field and office work with plumbing, fire, and electrical inspectors while investigating unsafe structures, issuing violation notices, and managing condemnation or emergency securing proceedings. Perform rodent and pest abatements, enforce property maintenance regulations, and prepare case documentation for Municipal Court testimony. Interpret ordinances and permit requirements for property owners, contractors, and the public using OpenGov software and mobile inspection tools. Maintain accurate records and conduct follow-up inspections to verify compliance.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Possession of a valid driver's license issued within the United States
- Ability to lift and move 40-50 lb. objects
- Ability to walk uneven terrain, construction sites, and residential properties
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders and access basements, attics, and crawl spaces
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to operate a City vehicle throughout the workday
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, keep routine records and work independently
- Ability to satisfactorily interact with fellow workers, other City Departments and public/regulatory agencies
- At least five (5) years of responsible construction experience in the building trades
- If selected, the candidate will be required to pass a BCI (Criminal Investigation)
- Possession of Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (Commercial Applications Division) Right-of-Way Pest Control (Category 6) certification or ability to obtain said certification within one year from date of hire
- Possession of Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (Commercial Applications Division) Public Health Pest Control (Category 8) certification or ability to obtain said certification within one year from date of hire
Desired Qualifications
- Five (5) years of experience in minimum housing or building inspection
