Metal Foundry Design Engineer

Job Summary

Review customer drawings, specifications, and 3D models to determine casting requirements and manufacturability. Design and improve casting layouts, patterns, core boxes, gating, risering, chills, and related tooling using CAD software. Support solidification and mold-filling simulations to improve casting quality and reduce scrap. Partner with production, quality, and pattern shop teams to troubleshoot defects, dimensional issues, and process concerns. Recommend design changes that improve castability, reduce rework, and support customer performance requirements. Assist with new product launches, sample castings, process documentation, and production standards while maintaining accurate engineering records. Promote a safe, quality-focused, and continuous improvement culture throughout the foundry.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Experience in a metal foundry, casting operation, pattern shop, tooling environment, or heavy manufacturing setting
  • Knowledge of sand casting, mold design, cores, gating, risering, shrinkage, solidification, heat treatment, and casting defects
  • Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, or similar
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, GD&T, and customer requirements
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and project management skills
  • Comfortable working in both office and foundry production environments
  • Self-motivated, practical, and willing to collaborate directly with operators, supervisors, engineers, and customers

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field preferred
  • Experience in a metal foundry, casting operation, pattern shop, tooling environment, or heavy manufacturing setting strongly preferred
  • Experience with casting simulation software such as MAGMASOFT or similar is a plus
