Job Summary
Mental Health Assistant role in a residential program for youths aged 13-18, providing practical and therapeutic support to help residents access community activities, develop daily living skills, and build social and independence capabilities. Responsibilities include assisting with self-care and domestic tasks, facilitating group and individual skill development, providing transport, and supporting residents in crisis situations. The role requires strong time management, administrative, and communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a youth mental health team. Must hold a Cert IV in Mental Health (or higher) and comply with safeguarding requirements including Working with Vulnerable People checks, police clearance, and a valid driver’s licence. Located with Marymead CatholicCare Canberra & Goulburn in Canberra, ACT, with a 35+ hour fortnight minimum and shift-based availability including evenings, overnights, weekends, and public holidays.
Required Qualifications
- A minimum Cert IV in Mental Health (or higher)
- Experience working with young people experiencing moderate to severe mental health challenges, ideally in a residential setting
- Strong communication, time management, and administration skills
- Ability to respond effectively in crisis situations
- Understanding of recovery-oriented practice and trauma-informed care
- Knowledge of WHS, privacy, and mandatory reporting requirements
- Current Working with Vulnerable People Card
- Police Check
- Driver’s Licence
