Job Summary
Engage in relational ministry with chronically unsheltered homeless guests by initiating Christ-focused conversations, providing crisis intervention, and assisting with hygiene needs. Lead life-skills and addiction recovery classes while advocating for guests navigating social services in Dallas, driving them to placement appointments for recovery programs and shelters. Track relationship-building through Neighbor Solutions and manage placement retention status. Be prepared to work shifts at the 24-hour winter Inclement Weather Shelter, managing day-to-day logistics and food service. Maintain active personal self-care and utilize an iPad to record case notes. This role combines chaplaincy, advocacy, and case management within a Christ-centered ministry dedicated to ending homelessness through restoration and hope.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED
- Three years of related 'life' or ministry experience
- Willingness to assist Guests with some hygiene issues when needed
- Be prepared to work shifts at our winter Inclement Weather Shelter
- Be able to lift boxes
- Drive a van
- Use an iPad to track case notes
- Be willing to help Guests with human hygiene challenges
- Have experience in or knowledge of trauma-informed care
- Have the ability to discern, deal with or manage situations that may feel uncomfortable with our Guests including relapse, human frailty, hygiene problems, mental and emotional trauma, hostility, deceit, manipulation, or other spiritual challenges
- Upholding a close and growing relationship as a disciple of Jesus Christ
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in pastoral care toward those struggling with addiction, mental illness, abandonment, homelessness and poverty
- Fluency in conversational Spanish
- Be patient and longsuffering while showing discernment
- Show grace to those who feel defeated by their own desires and cycles of destruction or are unable to articulate more than their frustration
- Interact gently and with empathy, as needed
- Have the ability to occasionally be light-hearted during difficult situations, or able to laugh in the midst of hard, real-life situations
- Be able to establish and manage boundaries, deny requests regularly, and overlook or navigate through entitlement attitudes, demonstrating self-control while not being easily offended
- Be sensitive to cultural differences such as race, ethnicity, and neighborhoods of origin
- Be knowledgeable of the Bible and comfortable teaching, witnessing, discipling and encouraging
- Have a demonstrable track record of maturity, integrity, taking personal initiative, being flexible in a busy and fast-paced environment, and being a trusted team member, working effectively across the ministry
- Have a strong, personal self-care program, being able to set and manage healthy boundaries
- Be humble with the ability to listen well and accept constructive feedback from the team manager and co-workers
- A commitment to build deep relationships
- A love for Jesus Christ and a desire to see His kingdom and glory increase
- A love for those in the homeless community, and desire for them to be won to a fruitful relationship with Jesus Christ, and to escape homelessness
