Job Summary
Melter Operator needed at the Vitreous State Laboratory in Washington, DC. Responsible for supporting operation of glass melters, air pollution control systems, and slurry preparations under supervision, with independence once trained. Collaborates with engineers and other staff, follows technical drawings, and maintains safety and reliability in high-temperature equipment environments. Requires experience in manufacturing/chemical/mechanical settings, strong attention to detail, and ability to work long shifts including weekends and nights. Compensation ranges $30.00-$50.00 per hour with comprehensive benefits. Location is Washington, DC; on-site role.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D required
- Vocational training or coursework in industrial technology, chemistry, or mechanics is preferred
- Minimum 5 years of experience in manufacturing, construction, chemical plants, or related mechanical environments
- Relevant experience in glass making operations or related field preferred
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, attention to detail, good penmanship, basic computer skills
- Ability to collaborate with engineers and follow technical drawings and schematics
- Basic understanding of mechanical systems (pumps, valves, blowers, etc.) and comfort around high temperature equipment
- Strong commitment to safety, reliability and teamwork
- Ability to remain alert during long shifts or overnight work
- Knowledge of electronic control systems preferred
- Ability to work 10 to 12-hour shifts, weekends, and nights occasionally
